What Is Mesothelioma?
Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer almost always caused by exposure to asbestos. It is a painful disease that attacks the sac lining of the chest and abdomen, and kills almost all its victims within a year of diagnosis. Most people don’t know they have mesothelioma until 20-30 years after they are exposed to asbestos. About 2,500 people die of the disease every year.
How Do You Get Mesothelioma?
Most people initially get mesothelioma at work, where they have been exposed to asbestos. Even short-term exposure to asbestos can lead to mesothelioma. People in the following jobs are at a high risk for the disease:
Construction
Heavy metals manufacturing
Insulation manufacturing
Machinists
Metal lathing & sheet metal working
Mining
Power generation
Railroading
Shipbuilding
Shipyard work
Steel mills
People who have either lived or worked near a shipyard or a plant that used asbestos are also at high risk of getting the disease.
Mesothelioma Is Usually the Fault of a Large Company. When someone gets mesothelioma, it’s almost always the fault of a big company that exposed the victim to asbestos. But even though they are liable for medical expenses and the pain and suffering caused the victims and their families, big companies typically will try to get out of paying.
